What is a Tambala

Tambala is the word for rooster in the language of the Chewa tribe, whose people live in Malaŵi, a small country in sub-Saharan Africa.

During the Chewas’ struggle for independence from the British Crown in the 1960’s, tambala came to have a special significance. Leaders of the revolutionary movement, playing off the Malaŵian saying that “many roosters call the dawn”, rallied the people to call a new country into existence. The people responded and the nation of Malawi was born on July 6, 1964.

To commemorate the sacrifice of the people in calling for a new dawn (kwacha), the Malaŵian currency is denominated in Kwachas and Tambalas.

This legacy is deeply engrained in the strategic advice and advocacy plans Tambala Strategy recommends to clients: if you want to have an impact, you need to be in the fight.
